4 journalists assaulted at NDC Oda congress

Four journalists are reported to have been assaulted by some irate supporters of the National Democratic Congress during the party’s Eastern Regional election held on Thursday 13th November, to elect a regional women’s organizer and a regional youth organizer at Akim Oda in the Eastern region.

The reports are that, reporters for Joy News, TV Africa, Radio Biyac and Daily Guide were those who were assaulted by some supporters group.
Speaking in an interview with Green News, one of the victims, Daniel Bampoe, the Daily Guide reporter explained that, the Afram Plains South’s Member of Parliament Hon. Joseph Appiah who supported the former deputy regional women’s organizer Stella Adu Obeng, who was contesting the incumbent Evelyn Korang for the position, reportedly assembled some delegates to entreat them to vote for his preferred candidate Stella Adu Korang.

This move did not go down well with the supporters of Evelyn Korang who interrupted the meeting and protested against the move by the Member of Parliament. This resulted in some level of chaos which was characterized by physical confrontations.

According to Daniel, this caught the attention of journalists and so they drew closer to witness the situation. He said, he was taking pictures of the scene when one policeman approached him and ordered him to stop taking the pictures and hand over the camera to him. He objected to the order to surrender his camera but accepted not to take pictures again

He said, “The police insisted I delete the pictures I have taken, which I refused. It was this confrontation that drew the attentions of other policemen to us. They came to help their colleague confiscate my camera but I refused”

He narrated further that “All of a sudden, some youth from behind slapped me on the face and others begun to heckle and push me”
He further said in an attempt to forestall the chaos, the police dragged him out of the premises. The irate supporters who followed him out of the premises insisted they did not want to see him around the area because he works with Daily Guide which they said is not favourable to the NDC.
According to him, the three other journalists from TV Africa, Joy news and Radio Biyac were also heckled and manhandled.
When asked if he had reported the matter to the police, he said he has not done so formally but verbally reported to plight to the Akim Oda police commander, ASP Peprah who pleaded with him to exercise patience and assured them the matter will be resolved later.
