Following the appointment Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate of John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flag bearer, many Ghanaians and groups have expressed their opinions on her nomination.
The governing New Patriotic Party organized a press conference in reaction to her nomination.
Speaking on Green FM’s Anopa Bosuo Show, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who addressed the press conference, revealed that the rationale behind the press conference was to welcome the vice presidential candidate for John Dramani Mahama.
The MP for Adentan Constituency described her track record and explains that although directives under her as the former Minister for Education were unsatisfactory, if only the selected candidate (Jane Naana Opoku) will be able to co-operate with the former president, Mahama to help progress the country, there is nothing to worry about then.
He proceeds by saying “It was during her time that trained teachers never had it easy. Decisions and directives made under her regime were not encouraging. Teacher trainees’ allowances were cancelled, capitation grants not been run well leaving teachers to work all the time without being paid. She also stood against the Free SHS Education Policy even when a lot of girls were in need. So we are looking at her competence, how well she can counsel. Whether it was successful or not, we include all that. Now, will she be able continue with the free SHS education policy or not? And how well will she be able to carry out the policy? We have welcomed her but we are looking at what she will be able to do”.
Hon. Yaw Buabeng Asamoah explained that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang would be scrutinized not necessarily by the NPP but Ghanaians in general.
The Communications Director of the NPP said that her role as the vice presidential candidate is extremely important as she will be heading the Economic Management Team of the country and her knowledge in that sector will be of essence.
“We are not looking at her excess baggage of bad records but we are only interested in her capabilities. Something extraordinary she can do to help the country. What she did previously will determine what she can do in the near future. Whatever Prof Jane Opoku-Agyemang wants to do, she has the go ahead; it will just be known. We serve the people of the country because they gave us the power to do so.
Service to the nation should be done in a unique way and for progress to occur in the country, we all will be notified.
Her motive of being Mahama running mates to change the country is what is necessary”. Hon. Yaw Buabeng stated.
