Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) across the country, will go to the polls on Saturday, June 20, to elect their parliamentary candidates ahead of the 2020 general elections. The Western North Regional Branch has indicated their preparedness to deliver a free and fair elections.
In an exclusive interview with Evans Nana Yaw Quaye, host of the current affairs programme dubbed ‘Ghana Nkomo’ on Green FM, the NPP Regional Secretary for the region, Mr. Samuel Kofi Abiaw, stated that the party is ready for the the exercise and will ensure that all directives from the national level regarding the elections are followed to the latter.
“we are ready for the elections, when it comes to Bibiani-Ahwiaso-Bekwai we have Alfred Obeng-Boateng, Christopher Addae and Kingsley Aboagye-Gyedu contesting. With the other two constituencies in the region, one of which is Sefwi Wiawso, the incumbent Dr. Kwaku Afriyie is going unopposed, so just as the party directed we have already started the processes for his acclamation. Same will be done at Sefwi Akontombra for Mr. Djornobuah Alex Tetteh who is also going unopposed.”
He hinted that they will ensure a strict adherence of the protocols announced by the President, in the fight against the coronavirus.
“In conducting the exercise will follow through the protocols the president laid down during his recent address. We will make we don’t exceed the 100 figure there who ever that will come to vote will have to leave the area after cast the vote.”
When asked by the host that was not going to impede candidates from policing the ballot, Mr. Abbiaw stated “that is why every candidate will have an agent there, those agents will be part of the hundred people we expect to be there, so why will candidates also be there, if you don’t trust your agent why do you engage them?” he queried.
Commenting also on issues with security, the NPP western North Regional Secretary assured that the police is the only institution that they have engaged to provide security for all and that no other private security from any quarters will be allowed.
Reacting to the particular case of the Sefwi Wiawso Constituency where some delegates and party members on two occasions went on the streets to demonstrate and register their displeasure against the disqualification of other contestants which saw the incumbent Dr. Kwaku Afriyie go unopposed, Mr. Abbiaw said “there was a little problem at Sefwi Wiawso but we have resolved it,. When the party takes a decision all members are to note that it is for the good of the party, we may all not agree with it but we have to accept it”
When the host drew his attention to the fact that, these demonstrators threatened to vote “skirt and blouse” if the disqualified candidates are not allowed to contest, Mr. Abbiaw responded, saying “like I said earlier, if the party top hierarchy takes a decision all of us will have to accept it, it is better to be nobody in a party in power than to be the General Secretary of a party in opposition”
In his concluding remarks, the regional secretary cautioned that the upcoming elections is an internal contest thus, candidates and their supporters should conduct themselves in such a way that after the elections they can come together to present a unified front for the upcoming 2020 elections.
