With the outbreak of the novel corona virus, health officials have served as frontline workers in the nation’s quest of reducing the spread of the virus or possibly curbing it.
One of the most effective ways of ensuring the wide spread of COVID-19 is to avoid mass gathering.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has in the past week embarked on a mass registration of voters. An exercise a group of 220 medical workers wrote an open letter to the commission advising it to reconsider the decision and rather used the old register, citing the potential spread of the virus and the ripple effects as their reasons.
The group has again written an open letter to the Electoral Commission to suspend the on-going exercise due to what they describe as the total disregard of the COVID 19 safety protocols.
Speaking to Dr. Essandor, one of the health officials on Green FM, he explained that the petition was sent to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Jean Mensah about two weeks ago when recorded cases of the pandemic were at 14,500 with total deaths, 95.
The Health Official calls the first petition a missed opportunity and partly blamed the government for the increment in the total number of cases of Covid-19. Emphasizing more on this, Dr. Pius Essandor mentioned that it is scientifically proven that the virus is contracted when a large number of people are clustered,
“Firstly, we wrote a letter to Mrs. Jean Mensah two weeks ago. The issue is about the pandemic, Covid-19. Looking at Ghana now, the virus seems to have come to stay and it is on the increase such that a lot more people are contracting it…It became a worry to us and it has been scientifically-proven that the virus is contracted when there is a cluster of people.
So we were really concerned because looking at our mass registration, a lot more people will be available and there will be mass gathering. When the letter was sent about two weeks ago, the cases was roughly 14,500 but just after two weeks we have seen a whooping jump to 20, 0058 and over 117 deaths as at yesterday When that happens, it will make the virus gain grounds and so we should either suspend the exercise or find another way of doing it. But unfortunately the EC did listen to us”
Dr. Pius Essandor explained that “as it was observed during the exercise the EC could not ensure the strict observance of the protocols, we are aware that within the perimeter some of these protocols were observed but outside it was nothing to write home about hence the need to for the second letter and looking at the fact that now doctors are being affected, currently there about 150 doctors in isolation and a far more number of nurses and if we are not careful, when people fall sick there wouldn’t be any doctor to care for them”
